The Cozy Mountain Motel is located in downtown Austin, a small, historic “living ghost town” that is really interesting to explore on foot. Your whole town is your neighborhood to walk in. Just a few minutes walk on Main Street (Highway 50) and you’ll pass this collection of great 19th century buildings including three old churches standing impertinently on a hill overlooking the town. There’s enough to do in just walking along the main street for an hour, reading the markers, feeling and smelling that ‘dry’ air of the Old West.

For dining and drinks, there aren’t many options but they are pretty character-filled and are all within a 5-10 minute walk. The town usually will boast one or two historic saloons like the International Hotel and Bar, one of Nevada’s oldest which cools its clientele with a cold beer and serves up a good simple meal. There is also a tiny cafe for breakfast or for lunch; this isn’t a town of varied culinary experiences. Still, to dine in an “authentic” historic saloon seems to be part of the adventure.

The provision of practical needs is met by a small general store and a gas station within walking distance. Among the unique walkable attractions is Stokes Castle, an odd three-story stone tower just outside the main town which requires a short but steep uphill walk to it. The town is an attraction in itself – a beautifully preserved slice of Nevada silver mining history – and the motel's site allows you to completely surround yourself with it on foot.
